The pavilion for the Antwerp World Diamond Centre is the third exhibition concept that Binst Architects has realised at the foot of the MAS, after the Port Pavilion and the Umicore Silver Pavilion. The exhibition concept is inspired by the characteristic faceted shape of diamonds. These facets were translated into an abstract triangular grid, a ‘diagrid’, which forms the basis for the entire design of the pavilion.
The various objects in the space follow the dimensions of this grid, and are formally based on rough diamonds, which have the shape of octahedrons. By providing the objects in different sizes, each according to the grid, they can fulfil different functions: table, info object, projection room and shop.
The large 6 m high diamond wall opposite the entrance is reserved to exhibit jewellery, multimedia and possibly holograms, and can, by transforming the wall, include other functions: seats, projection surfaces, tablets for touchscreens, and light elements, etc.
