In this corner building between Tabaksvest and Theaterplein, on Antwerp’s Leien, nothing is what it seems. It appears to be a coherent interbellum architecture, but is in fact an organically grown succession of additions, extensions and alterations that nonetheless presents itself visually as a whole. So how does one literally add another layer to this rich history? After studying numerous volumes and variants, we arrived at a form that fully relates to the existing context. We used the play of horizontal and vertical articulation, the façade detailing and the individuality of each addition to create a sober additional building layer. An addition with articulation and materialisation that enters into dialogue with the existing but subtly accentuates its own details. A delicate balancing act between identity and conformity, between past and future, knowing that change is the only certainty.
