BINST ARCHITECTS developed an ambitious feasibility study for the redevelopment of the castle site in Oud-Rekem – one of Flanders’ most characterful and protected village ensembles (officially voted “Most Beautiful Village in Flanders” in 2008).
This study explores how the impressive water castle and the 19th-century hospital wing, together with the adjacent grounds, can be revitalized into a vibrant destination while preserving their unique heritage value.
We start from the strengths of the site: the majestic sightlines to the castle, the serene park setting, the historic enclosure walls, and the distinctive architectural layering. Within the zone designated for “tourist attractions – annexes,” we explore various future scenarios including characterful residences, high-quality accommodations, or public programs such as cultural and wellness facilities.
Our approach always seeks a solution that reinforces the heritage, respects the landscape, and gives the site renewed meaning and experience.
With this study, BINST ARCHITECTS emphasizes adaptive reuse as an innovative design strategy – a way to seamlessly integrate heritage, sustainability, and contemporary ambitions. The result is an inspiring vision that prepares the Oud-Rekem castle site for a future where past and renewal meet – and enhance each other.
