New building in historic center of Ghent, Kouter
The unique location of the project, in the heart of the city of Ghent, makes it necessary to involve the immediate surroundings in the project. The more detailed design choices are therefore often a direct consequence of the results of studies into the development of the surrounding urban fabric.
Combine the office function, shopping and relaxation with plenty of apartments, in order to obtain an interesting mix of functions and to spread the active hours rather than allow them to peak. For the KBC offices we opted to combine the historical value of the Kouter as a ‘banking square’ with the peace and quiet and view inside the plot.
With the typology of the shop activities, we also consciously try and expand the current shop fabric and, as a natural extension of the current shop-walking route, to make a meaningful connection between the Kalandeberg and the Kouter.
Finally, apartments are provided on the upper floors with green courtyards on the one hand and a view of the historic centre on the other.
