Apartments along the Jordaenskaai, Antwerp
The quays of Antwerp border the city, which on this line engages in dialogue with the Scheldt and the future recreational character of this linear place. Living on the Scheldt is much more than living by the water, how the reflection of light, openness and vistas can be optimally reconciled with architecture. This corner infill is strictly and consistently conceived as a simple volume of stacked tables with various thicknesses of tabletops that collectively form a visual composition.
The alternating façade bands of light natural stone with expressive veins place the water abstracted on the Scheldt quay, as a reconciliation with the context, as a special reference to the power of water and the daily visual relationship with it. The two-bedroom apartments are crowned by a duplex penthouse. The lively ground floor accommodates standing room, a commercial infill, bicycle storage and entrance hall. Black exterior joinery contrasts beautifully as a modernist touch.
