The existing house at No. 10 was demolished, with the exception of the façade, and rebuilt. The existing houses on neighboring plots were demolished and replaced with an apartment building scaled to fit the surroundings. The existing carport at the back of the property was expanded.
The characteristic building at Kerkstraat No. 10 had historical value. The façade and some interior elements were preserved. The façade was restored, and the valuable interior elements were reintegrated into the interior as much as possible.
The single-family home has a beautiful, large garden, and the intention was to merge the indoors and outdoors as much as possible. A conservatory-like feeling was created on the garden side. The rear façade is finished in green zinc with large, slender windows.
The new apartment building needs to fit between the historic façade of No. 10 and the more recent construction on the other side. The ridge line and cornice heights of these neighboring buildings are also different.
Within the new development, a division in volume was therefore created to facilitate this transition. The right-hand volume, containing circulation areas and technical spaces, is recessed. This causes the left-hand main volume to be somewhat detached from the adjacent neighbor, creating a buffer. This setback also reduces the façade width of the apartment block, making it more in scale with the surrounding buildings.
A gray, sleek façade panel was chosen as a neutral counterpart to the pronounced historic façade. To introduce some playfulness into this new façade, the windows were designed in varying sizes and heights.
At the back of the garden, the existing carport is expanded with a black box, visible from the terrace of the house. In the volume with the black façade panel, a large window is provided where a car can be displayed behind it.
