Antwerp Airport is planning to upgrade its current VIP terminal and has organised a competition for this purpose. The design expands the awnings requested in the programme to produce a conceptual ‘wing’ under which all functional activities are bundled. The shape of the wing refers to aviation in general, while the dynamic appearance creates an appropriate setting for welcoming VIPs. In addition to being an iconic element, the wing also forms the awning, which prevents the building from heating up excessively in the summer, while allowing the winter sun to flood in. The large surface area also offers the possibility of integrating solar cells and recovering rainwater.
