Our metropolis of Brussels has been bustling for decades in its diversity of urban planning statements, and so too is this seventies icon of Arch. Jean Verschuere is a special curiosity, an idiosyncratic integration that clearly marks its position. The site is upgraded to a more current urban development translation in which ambitions of developer and city intertwine to form a historic opportunity and reinforcing status of “renewed connectivity”.
The project is designed with respect for the individuality of the existing building; through maximum preservation we let it play a recognizable role. The transformation of the pedestal provides a qualitative continuity whereby the border between public and private space is strongly intervened for an inviting character.
The whole is provided with a new elegant crown which refers to the rhythm of the existing building but brings in its own identity. A cleaning and treatment of the concrete allows the original tones and aggregates to speak for themselves again. Together with a well thought out and refined joinery detailing, a homage to the modernist principles is created.
