In the heart of Antwerp, between Theaterplein and Botanical Garden, 11 high-end and energy-efficient residential units will soon be constructed. The currently congested plot will be cleared as much as possible, so that the spacious duplex flats will receive maximum sunlight from the generous terraces with south-facing windows. The stately character and historical context of the Arenbergstraat translates into a subtle triadic articulation of the façade, with various architectural elements responding to the surroundings. A stately base marks the commercial floor and entrances, a cantilevered steel canopy provides shelter and elegant horizontal bands forge the rhythm of the windows into a unified ensemble. The combination of architectural concrete and natural stone in reddish-brown tones complete the whole, providing a contemporary touch within a classic articulation.
