Albert, a new urban landmark by restoring the grandeur of the historic factory site.
The former telephone factory ATEA in Berchem between Belpairestraat and Boomgaardstraat is undergoing a complete transformation. The disturbing outbuildings make way for a refreshing new building and the factory is fully repurposed into a vibrant mix of functions in addition to a top-up; the existing supermarket will remain in its familiar place and will be reinforced with extra office space and apartments within the rough character of this industrial patrimony.
The non-original joinery in the existing factory facade will be replaced by new joinery with the same subdivision as the original joinery.
Behind the historic facade, lockable winter gardens are being created as outdoor space for the apartments. The tone-on-tone topping crowns the building in a respectful way and, together with the new program mix, will give a new impetus to the building and its surroundings.
The Albert Building will undoubtedly become a new characteristic cornerstone for this already vibrant part of the city.
