Cathedrals are powerful and stately city icons; they are everlasting monuments that still outshine the architecture of today. St. James’ Church adorns the old town, like a magnificent statue looking down on the street. In the shadow of its tower and in the axis of the portal, a central entrance faces the new faculty building for the University of Antwerp on the other side. This winning competition design is characterised by the student-friendly and open aspect of a large central hall. The wide, sloping staircase serves as a seating area and access to the auditoriums. Low building volumes at the rear are consistent with the scale of the neighbourhood and surround a monastery garden, creating an urban square on the roof of the hall. Light cylinders break up the surface of the roof, illuminating the hall during the day and the central monastery garden at night.
