TECHNICAL CLUSTER NORTH – VICTORY IN CONTEST

TECHNICAL CLUSTER NORTH – ANTWERP (60.000 m²)
New energy-neutral building for the city’s operational services in Havanastraat commissioned by AG Vespa.

A new, energy-neutral, facility on the Havana site in the north of Antwerp will be built to centralise a large part of the city’s operational services. AG Vespa set out to find the best partner to realise this project – ‘Technical Cluster North’. The team Cordeel – Van Roey – BINST ARCHITECTS – AAVO architects proved to be the most favourable candidate. If everything goes smoothly, works will start in the spring of 2025 and the building will be completed in the summer of 2027. More than 1500 logistics operatives of the city of Antwerp maintain parks, roads and buildings, support numerous events and collect domestic waste every day. They ensure that the city is and remains a pleasant, attractive living environment for all residents and visitors. To guarantee high-quality services, the city will centralise a large part of these operational services. This will involve one large site in the north of the city, and a second in the south at a location yet to be determined.

UNTITLED in Knack weekend

Untitled, Binst Architects, Lannoo,
89,99 euro. Vanaf 5 maart in de betere boekhandel.

‘UNTITLED’ NEWSFLASH

BINST ARCHITECTS celebrates 50th anniversary with manifesto and reference work UNTITLED
A conceptual and analytical gesamtkunstwerk as new blueprint, offering in-depth insights into our multidisciplinary body of work.

‘UNTITLED: The Making Of’
This document was born out of a dual mission and message. On the one hand, our focus is on rethinking and more strongly defining our work as an updated blueprint. On the other hand, we emphasise the growing need to illuminate the complex building medium from a series of thematic chapters. Both missions are united under the conceptual title ‘UNTITLED’. This book doesn’t rely on any specific notion, name or real title, but ‘UNTITLED’ refers to a working methodology and attitude of continuous evolution and change. It also offers an up-to-date view of the office BINST ARCHITECTS. ‘UNTITLED’ is a term often used in art, inviting the viewer to interpret a work without a title. We consider it a key word that coincides with the structure of our book.”

B05 magazine online!

In our jubilee edition, B 05 magazine represents the footprint and preview of a pivoting design year, where this green cover is partly symbolic for our increasing focus on a conceptually wider DNA and a more outspoken use of materials in our architecture. In short, a complementary selection of various commissions with a grand footprint in ambition, scale, and social interaction. The ‘In Focus’ section features Aequor, a sharply defined, bright residential tribune as the recent, newly constructed business seats along the MAS as well as an atypical urban villa as a sculptural object or architectural layered cake in Boechout. Meanwhile, our ‘Room for Art’, also known as ‘B scene’, has recently been transformed into a joint scene and complementary message from Binst Architects models, B brand design furniture concepts, and our growing appreciation for arts integration.

The new VRT building: the two alternative designs
The new design for the VRT building was announced in June. It was selected after a Design & Build procedure. Two other construction teams were also retained during the selection procedure and were allowed to work out a design: namely the teams around the architectural offices BINST ARCHITECTS and Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects on the one hand, and Architecten Achtergael, META architecture office and jo taillieu architects on the other. They will be presenting their design for the new VRT building for the first time on architectura.be.

Project visit Renson Outdoor

The brand-new Renson Outdoor branch will be completed by the end of this year and will employ 250 people within five years. But for NAV-members, the family business likes to open its doors a bit earlier during a behind-the-scenes project visit on 16 September.

The new branch in Kruisem covers a total area of 10ha and will focus on Renson Outdoor solutions with the NOA showroom outside. During the tour, different floors of the site are visited and at each stop a certain aspect of the building’s architecture is explained. The philosophy and techniques used are also discussed, such as the focus on geothermal energy using a large BEO field and cooling/heating via concrete core activation.

The architect of the project, Binst Architects, will also be present during the presentation and visit.

THE HEADQUARTERS OF AN ARCHITECTURE STUDIO IN ANTWERP BECOMES A DECLARATION OF INTENT

HQ Binst Architects settles into a former warehouse in the port area of Antwerp facing the Scheldt River.
A parking lot, a restaurant, a dance floor, and then a restaurant once more: the building hosting the headquarters of Binst Architects in Antwerp (including the teams that worked on projects B and B7) is reborn once more. Originally constructed as a deposit for African rubber collected and created from lianas of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this former warehouse facing the right banks of the Scheldt River is now a creative hub spanning over 1,000 square meters. Nestled between the quays and the Gedempte Zuiderdokken car park, Luikstraat 7 is surrounded by the MuHKA museum of contemporary art, FoMu photography museum, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in a stimulating combination of layered, avant-garde structures. Here in the former port area, the geometries of bricks forming the original facade are paired with the industrial coldness of steel between balconies and stairs in New York style. …

‘Cityzen – Brussels’ Competition Winner!

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION – 62 100 m² Redevelopment of the renowned Center Monnaie Brussels offices, hotels and apartments in collaboration with Snøhetta commissioned by Immobel and Whitewood.

In September 2019, IMMOBEL, WHITEWOOD and DW Partners launched an international architecture competition together with the Brussels’ Maître Architecte (BMA) to redevelop the 62,000 m² building above ‘The Mint’ shopping centre. The partners of this thorough urban renovation (no new construction) want to transform the building into a mixed residential, office and hotel complex by 2024. The assignment consisted of giving the building an architectural interpretation that matches the central location of the project within the capital. It is also the intention to open up the current closed character of the pedestal allowing it to communicate with its immediate surroundings.
Five international teams of architects (two of them Belgian participants) were selected from more than 50 entries. Out of the various projects, all excellent, the jury chose the design of the Norwegian firm Snøhetta and the Belgian firm Binst Architects. The winning design distinguishes itself through respect for the architectural value of the existing building and its integration into the urban context. For the execution of the project, Snøhetta and Binst Architects will be assisted by the Brussels architectural offices DDS and ADE.

The jury was composed of representatives of the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels, the Brussels Master Builder, Immobel and Whitewood.

‘Linkeroever – Antwerp’: in 12 years from unloved district to the new hotspot. Every Fleming knows the ‘Linkeroever’, but until recently the neighborhood did not have a really good image. This has now changed more than ever, because the Linkeroever is slowly becoming the new hotspot in Flanders.
