One Baelskaai by BINST ARCHITECTS is, as the name suggests, the figurehead of Oosteroever, the new district in full development in the historic port of Ostend. Oosteroever stands for a daring urban development. This design creates a statement and landmark with a strong identity at this exceptional location. An architecture of undulating terraces with expressive edges refers to the surrounding coastal area, while in combination with the sophisticated materialization a tight detailing it gives the project a powerful, luxurious appearance. ….

In our jubilee edition, B 05 magazine represents the footprint and preview of a pivoting design year, where this green cover is partly symbolic for our increasing focus on a conceptually wider DNA and a more outspoken use of materials in our architecture. In short, a complementary selection of various commissions with a grand footprint in ambition, scale, and social interaction. The ‘In Focus’ section features Aequor, a sharply defined, bright residential tribune as the recent, newly constructed business seats along the MAS as well as an atypical urban villa as a sculptural object or architectural layered cake in Boechout. Meanwhile, our ‘Room for Art’, also known as ‘B scene’, has recently been transformed into a joint scene and complementary message from Binst Architects models, B brand design furniture concepts, and our growing appreciation for arts integration.
The new VRT building: the two alternative designs
The new design for the VRT building was announced in June. It was selected after a Design & Build procedure. Two other construction teams were also retained during the selection procedure and were allowed to work out a design: namely the teams around the architectural offices BINST ARCHITECTS and Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects on the one hand, and Architecten Achtergael, META architecture office and jo taillieu architects on the other. They will be presenting their design for the new VRT building for the first time on architectura.be.
The brand-new Renson Outdoor branch will be completed by the end of this year and will employ 250 people within five years. But for NAV-members, the family business likes to open its doors a bit earlier during a behind-the-scenes project visit on 16 September.
The new branch in Kruisem covers a total area of 10ha and will focus on Renson Outdoor solutions with the NOA showroom outside. During the tour, different floors of the site are visited and at each stop a certain aspect of the building’s architecture is explained. The philosophy and techniques used are also discussed, such as the focus on geothermal energy using a large BEO field and cooling/heating via concrete core activation.
The architect of the project, Binst Architects, will also be present during the presentation and visit.

‘Circular building with materials passport’
The Dutch company Madaster developed a digital materials passport for buildings. That passport is a crucial link to enable circular building.
BINST ARCHITECTS is one of the partners to give Madaster Belgium a boost financially & in name recognition.
Luc Binst: We represent a history of 50 years in our field. And so we also bear a very important social responsibility in which sustainability, circular construction in itself, will be crucial in the future and so we definitely want to put our shoulders under this initiative.

THE HEADQUARTERS OF AN ARCHITECTURE STUDIO IN ANTWERP BECOMES A DECLARATION OF INTENT
HQ Binst Architects settles into a former warehouse in the port area of Antwerp facing the Scheldt River.
A parking lot, a restaurant, a dance floor, and then a restaurant once more: the building hosting the headquarters of Binst Architects in Antwerp (including the teams that worked on projects B and B7) is reborn once more. Originally constructed as a deposit for African rubber collected and created from lianas of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this former warehouse facing the right banks of the Scheldt River is now a creative hub spanning over 1,000 square meters. Nestled between the quays and the Gedempte Zuiderdokken car park, Luikstraat 7 is surrounded by the MuHKA museum of contemporary art, FoMu photography museum, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in a stimulating combination of layered, avant-garde structures. Here in the former port area, the geometries of bricks forming the original facade are paired with the industrial coldness of steel between balconies and stairs in New York style. …

A port warehouse in Antwerp is now an architecture studio. Binst Architects redevelops a former warehouse in the port of Antwerp to house its new headquarters. The project represents the multiple souls of the firm.
The new campus in the ‘Oude God’ park area in Mortsel accommodates the three existing urban primary schools and kindergartens from the immediate vicinity. The new school complex needs to be a sustainable, energy-efficient building offering cultural and social added value.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION – 62 100 m² Redevelopment of the renowned Center Monnaie Brussels offices, hotels and apartments in collaboration with Snøhetta commissioned by Immobel and Whitewood.
In September 2019, IMMOBEL, WHITEWOOD and DW Partners launched an international architecture competition together with the Brussels’ Maître Architecte (BMA) to redevelop the 62,000 m² building above ‘The Mint’ shopping centre. The partners of this thorough urban renovation (no new construction) want to transform the building into a mixed residential, office and hotel complex by 2024. The assignment consisted of giving the building an architectural interpretation that matches the central location of the project within the capital. It is also the intention to open up the current closed character of the pedestal allowing it to communicate with its immediate surroundings.
Five international teams of architects (two of them Belgian participants) were selected from more than 50 entries. Out of the various projects, all excellent, the jury chose the design of the Norwegian firm Snøhetta and the Belgian firm Binst Architects. The winning design distinguishes itself through respect for the architectural value of the existing building and its integration into the urban context. For the execution of the project, Snøhetta and Binst Architects will be assisted by the Brussels architectural offices DDS and ADE.
The jury was composed of representatives of the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels, the Brussels Master Builder, Immobel and Whitewood.
Binst Architects guarantees maximum continuity in its workflow thanks to the rewarding opportunities of teleworking.
For example, all our project teams and those in charge are now in permanent communication with each other via videoconferencing and stand-by for all necessary consultation moments with clients, engineering firms, contractors and third parties.
Let us seize this inconceivable period to communicate and meet remotely in an even more efficient way in the future.
With the technology on our side, as partners, we can obtain a win-win situation. Feel free to contact us if you would like to coordinate our and your methods even more optimally.
We continue to support all our ongoing construction sites in close dialogue with our clients and all the contractors involved, in compliance with strict health and safety regulations.
We wish everyone happy holidays, beautiful moments and a great start to 2020! Our team is again present from Monday January 6, 2020. “
MAS in sight. The new Port House in Antwerp was designed by top Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. The old harbor house went down. The promoters Bermaso and Vlaamse Poort now attract AEQUOR, 64 luxury apartments with a view of the Scheldt, MAS, port and city. As architect Luc Binst states: “Aequor is the living room stand with the business seats on ‘t Eilandje.“
New headquarters for Cordeel in Temse. The Cordeel Group nv established its new headquarters on the site of the old De Boelwerf shipyard in Temse. The construction company groups its services there for the Belgian market on a site of 20 ha. The new headquarters is much more than a calling card. The building also illustrates the knowledge and economic ambitions of the construction company.
‘Linkeroever – Antwerp’: in 12 years from unloved district to the new hotspot. Every Fleming knows the ‘Linkeroever’, but until recently the neighborhood did not have a really good image. And that had a lot to do with, for example, the high crime rates and the deterioration of the neighborhood. This has now changed more than ever, because the Linkeroever is slowly becoming the new hotspot in Flanders.
RES Awards 2019 “NOMINEES”. “HQ CORDEEL” (Temse) in category: “Best development for institutional investors”. The RES Awards Ceremony will take place on the 19th of September 2019 during the Realty fair in Knokke.

The new school complex, located in the “Oude God” park in Mortsel, houses three schools of the region together. This project reflects a concern for sustainability and saving energy, with cultural and social added value. The new campus has room for 700 pupils. It consists of a primary school of 18 classes, a pre-school of 12 classes and a central multipurpose room. The buildings are linked by a sloping roof garden used for educational purposes, seamlessly integrating the school with the surrounding park. In addition, the complex houses a sports hall, and a farm-school with a communal vegetable garden, which is open to local inhabitants, covering a total area of 6,345 m2, of which 5,287 m2 is for use by the schools and 1,058 m2 for sports facilities.
