‘X’ isn’t your standard architecture publication. This blue book sets out instead to offer readers a different view of architecture as a medium. For some time now, Luc Binst of Binst Architects has felt the need to put together a shared narrative with some of the architects, artists, teachers and other prominent personalities he has encountered during his training and his professional career. He was eager to go back to the source and to refocus on the essential, based on the central ideas of ‘self-reflection’, ‘ways of seeing’ and ‘global theory formation’. Ten radical figures – Paul Gees, Dirk Jaspaert, Luc Deleu, Klaas Goris, Dirk Coopman, Lode Janssens, Honoré d’O, Bea Matthys, Günther Förg and Luk Lambrecht himself – were interviewed in collaboration with art historian Luk Lambrecht, by way of introduction to the ‘X’ THEORY presented in the central section. Through ‘10 diagrams’, ‘10 categories’ and ‘10 projects’, the book sheds a new light on the past and future of an architect’s firm that has embarked on a different course since the death of Jo Crepain.
