APARTMENTS ‘PARK OOST’ ANTWERP
Situated on a prominent visual location at the Noordersingel, the building takes on a role as eye-catcher. Because of its unusual position on the crossroads of different transport routes as well as the railway roads, special attention was given to the issue of traffic noise and air pollution. Binst Architects seized this disadvantage, transforming it into an opportunity to create a piece of clear, unambiguous architecture.
Three facades are clad in story-high glazing along the balconies to maximize comfort, views and natural light penetration. The sliding balcony-panels generate a lively image and grant the building a particular flair. This is how the ‘housing grandstand’ – with a mix of housing typologies – creates a dialogue with its environment. The south-west orientation of the project guarantees sun-soaked terraces, which are directly connected to the living rooms. By raising the building, free space on the ground floor opened up, visually and physically connecting the different approaches to the site. Commercial zones and entryways assure much needed liveliness, which combined with a playful arrangement of these spaces creates a pleasant meeting spot.
